VW Transporter T6 (SWB) Mountain Bike Van Conversion – Case Study

Converting a panel van into a purpose-built adventure vehicle is always a balance between practicality, durability, and comfort. For this project, the goal was clear from the outset: create a clean, hard-wearing, and rider-focused setup that makes transporting and storing mountain bikes effortless, while still offering a comfortable space to travel with the biking crew. Here’s a full breakdown of how we transformed a standard VW Transporter T6 into a fully functional mountain bike van.

Starting Point: A Blank Canvas

The van arrived as a standard panel van, empty, unlined, and ready for a complete transformation. The first step in any conversion is to strip everything back to basics. This allows for a clean foundation and ensures that every element added later is installed properly and built to last.

We removed all factory linings and fittings, exposing the bare metal shell. This stage is crucial not just for access, but also for identifying any imperfections, ensuring proper preparation before insulation and finishing begins.

Adding Light and Visibility: Side Window Installation

To improve natural light and create a more open feel inside the van, we installed a CamperGlass side window. This involved carefully measuring, marking, and cutting into the van’s bodywork, one of the more precise stages of the build.

Once the aperture was cut, the window was bonded securely in place, transforming the interior environment. The addition of the window not only enhances visibility but also makes the space feel far less enclosed, especially important for longer trips or days spent inside the van.

Comfort Upgrade: Sound Deadening and Insulation

Panel vans are notoriously noisy and prone to temperature fluctuations. To address this, we applied DODO sound deadening materials throughout the van to reduce road noise and vibrations.

Following that, we installed high-quality DODO insulation to regulate temperature, keeping the van warmer in colder conditions and cooler in the summer months. This step dramatically improves overall comfort and usability, particularly for riders heading out in early mornings or unpredictable weather.

Interior Finish: Carpeting for a Clean Look

With insulation in place, the next step was carpeting the interior. This not only improves the aesthetic appeal but also adds another layer of thermal and acoustic insulation.

We used durable 4-way-stretch automotive carpet, carefully fitted to the walls and contours of the van to create a clean, professional finish. The result is a space that feels refined without sacrificing durability, perfect for the demands of an active lifestyle.

Flooring: Built to Handle the Outdoors

Mountain biking brings mud, water, and wear. So the flooring needed to be tough and easy to maintain. We installed a high-quality rubber floor, designed to withstand heavy use while remaining easy to clean.

Whether it’s muddy boots, wet gear, or bike maintenance on the go, this flooring solution ensures the van stays practical and low-maintenance.

Safety and Seating: M1 Crash-Tested Rear Seats

Safety was a key consideration in this build. We installed M1 crash-tested rear seats, providing safe and compliant seating for passengers.

These seats not only meet safety standards but also integrate neatly into the layout, ensuring the van remains functional without compromising space for bikes and gear.

Bike Storage: Fork-Mount Rail System

At the heart of this conversion is its ability to transport mountain bikes securely and efficiently. We installed a rail system designed for fork-mounted bike storage.

This setup allows bikes to be mounted quickly and held firmly in place during transit. By removing the front wheel and securing the forks directly to the rail, the system maximises space and keeps the bikes stable, even on longer journeys or rougher roads.

Lighting and Power: Spotlights with USB Charging

To round off the build, we fitted integrated spotlights to provide bright, focused lighting inside the van. Whether loading bikes at dusk or organising gear early in the morning, good lighting makes a big difference.

Alongside this, we added USB charging points, ensuring devices like phones, GPS units, and bike lights can be easily powered on the go.

The Finished Result

The completed conversion strikes a balance between rugged practicality and clean design. Every element has been chosen to support an active, outdoor lifestyle, making it the ideal companion for mountain biking adventures.

From the durable flooring to the secure bike storage and improved comfort through insulation and lighting, this VW Transporter T6 is now fully equipped for life on and off the trail.

Thinking About Your Own Build?

Whether you're transporting bikes, heading off-grid, or simply looking for a more functional vehicle, a well-planned conversion makes all the difference. This project highlights how a thoughtful approach can turn a standard van into something truly purpose-built.
