VW Crafter Conversion Case Study - Building Adventure HQ
Some campervan conversions are about squeezing a bed and a kettle into a van and calling it a day. This wasn't one of those projects!
When our customer brought us his 2022 Volkswagen Crafter 4Motion, he had a clear vision: create a premium adventure van that could comfortably disappear off-grid for days at a time, handle all-weather touring, and, most importantly, provide a secure space for a very important travelling companion. The dog. And not a tiny handbag dog either. A proper adventure dog.
What followed was one of our most ambitious Crafter conversions to date.

The Brief
The starting point was a low-mileage , 4 Wheel Drive, Volkswagen Crafter CR35 Trendline 4Motion LWB. A fantastic base vehicle with serious touring credentials and enough space to create something special. The brief was simple on paper:
- Fully off-grid capable
- Comfortable for extended trips
- Internal shower and hot water
- Premium kitchen setup
- Plenty of storage
- Stylish, modern interior
- Dedicated under-bed dog kennel
Simple. But as anyone who's ever built a campervan knows, "simple" usually means several hundred decisions and thousands of hours of work.

Building an Off-Grid Powerhouse
Modern campervan owners don't just want somewhere to sleep. They want to charge laptops, run appliances, cook meals, stay warm and remain completely independent from campsite hook-ups. Challenge accepted.
This Crafter received a serious electrical upgrade featuring:
- 400Ah lithium battery system
- 380W solar array
- Victron smart charging equipment throughout
- 3000W inverter
- Multiple USB and 12V charging points
- Full 240V system with double sockets throughout the van
In practical terms this means you can brew coffee, charge devices, cook dinner and watch a film while parked miles away from civilisation.
Water, Heat and Home Comforts
Adventure is great. Cold showers in November? Less great. To make this van genuinely usable year-round, we installed a comprehensive hot and cold water system complete with 15L electric hot water system, internal shower room, kitchen sink, fresh water monitoring and frost protection. Whether you're washing muddy boots, rinsing down mountain bikes or enjoying a hot shower after a day on the trails, this setup delivers home comforts wherever you park.
The Kitchen: Small Space, Big Appetite
One of our favourite parts of this build was creating a kitchen that genuinely works. Too many camper kitchens feel like an afterthought. This one doesn't. The specification included a dual induction hob, combined microwave, oven and air fryer, 50L fridge freezer, preparation space and practical storage throughout.
Designing Around the Dog
Now for the feature that got everyone in the workshop talking. The custom under-bed dog kennel. This wasn't a case of squeezing a crate into a spare corner. The kennel was integrated into the furniture design from the outset, creating a secure, comfortable travel space beneath the main bed platform. It gives the dog a dedicated place to relax while keeping the main living area open and uncluttered. A campervan should work for every member of the family, four-legged members included.

A Colour Scheme That Turns Heads
The customer wanted something that felt premium, modern and a little different from the endless sea of grey interiors we see across the industry. The final combination worked beautifully:
- Racing green furniture
- Tan leather upholstery
- Light grey wall finishes
- Wood effect flooring
- Wooden ceiling slats
The result is a space that feels warm, sophisticated and welcoming without being overly flashy. It's the sort of interior that makes people step inside and immediately start planning adventures. The interior layout utilised an awesome kit from our friends at CamperLux which included loads of storage, dining area, large bed, and shower room. We’re big fans of the Camper Lux kits which never fail to impress.

The Details That Make the Difference
Great campervan conversions aren't defined by one big feature. They're defined by hundreds of small decisions. Throughout this build we incorporated: warm white LED lighting, under-cabinet ambient lighting, bedside reading lights, swivelling front seats, Maxxair roof ventilation and custom window blinds. These are the features that transform a van from "nice" into "I don't want to go home."

The Finished Result
After months of planning, fabrication, wiring, plumbing, trimming and testing, the Crafter emerged from the workshop transformed. What started as a commercial vehicle became a genuine adventure platform with off-grid capabilities, dog approved and ready for all four seasons. Most importantly, it was built around how the customer actually wanted to travel. Because the best campervan isn't the one with the biggest specification sheet. It's the one that perfectly fits the people using it (and the dog!)
